Sharpening those edged blades

#1 Post by Ron Kulas »

I designed the Stay Sharp Broadhead sharpening guide back in 2015 and almost since day one, we have been asked 2 question over and over. "Does it work on knives?" and "Do you make a knife sharpening guide"

The more shows we attend, the more we get those questions. To that end we have been working on a knife sharpening guide.

If you have bought a knife sharpener, What made you open your wallet? As a maker of a broadhead sharpening guides, the most common question we get is "will it work on knives?" and "do you make a knife sharpener?" Its been such an ongoing and constant request, we have been in the design phase of a knife sharpening guide.

Our drivers thus far have been (in particular order)

1. Price point (we want to make a low cost sharpening solution. Call it being cheap or wanting a bargain, its clear bowhunters dislike parting with their money. )

2. Ease of use

3. Wide variety of guided honing angles (7 to be exact, 17, 19, 22, 24, 26, 28 and 30 degrees because everybody has a preference they don't want to break with)

4. compact

5. handle up to an 8 inch kitchen knife blade.

6. diamond material removing/honing. (stones are great and all but slow and time is money)

So after a few prototypes, this is what we have arrived at. We continue to tweek.

After sharpening a few blades we came to the conclusion that the experience could be improved with the addition of a base that supports the sharpening guide so we designed one.

I'm really liking that! One of my bugaboos with sharpening either broadheads or knives is getting the angle correct by eye. I seem to have an issue with that for some reason. I mean, I can get the sharp, but not hair-poppin'/Ginsu sharp. I'm happy to say the Stay Sharp broadhead sharpener works as designed, and I'm sure the knife sharpener will as well.

Hmmmm...probably not, but it seems kinda complicated. I been tempted to get a sharpener, but then I figure I've made due for 50 years....esp the broadhead one does look easier though.

Kirk, 90% of sharpening comes from understanding metal and how it acts when worked , and feel....not "eye". Once you understand it well, you can get hair popping sharp with a simple file. There is a learning curve though, and for those who just dont wanna work for it to learn a life long skill, Ron can fix you up.
The element of surprise can never be replaced by persistence.

I'm confident sharpening all my broadheads with just a mill file. It's all I use most of the time. But when it comes to my butcher knives lol i suck. I can't get the right angles. I would buy something like this to try. I like having sharp knives when I process my deer.

First prototype of the base. After using it some tweeks need to be made.

Looks like a slick rig, I'd be interested in one.

As I work towards improving my knife sharpening guide I put this video together discussing creating the burr and then removing or straightening it to get a razor’s edge using our prototype Stay Sharp knife sharpening guide. Having 4 sharpening medium on the same hone rod (other mfgrs have one medium per rod) seems to make more sense and reduces cost. Including the super fine ceramic strop on the rod takes micro burr polishing to a level most home sharpening guides miss. Having 7 home angles (and especially 2 degree increments vs 5 degree provided by other mfgrs) also seems to make better sense. Also, I dont advocate for using oil or water during the sharpening process. As far as I can tell no mfgrs include a hardwood burr breaker/straightener.
