Someone needs a facelift!

#1 Post by Carpdaddy »

What does a bowyer do when he is not building a bow? Well I like to pull one off the wall and give it a facelift! Usually this just means touch up and clean up from use, not this time.
I haven’t built a lot of bows and have a lot to learn, but don’t look as though I’ll be building any more due to health reasons, so I been piddling on a few old ones. Very slowly though, I may start something and not come back for weeks. My first victim was the old greenie, I built this bow back in 2016, the year I was also battling cancer. I made some boo-boo’s on the build but it was good enough for me, but lately I’ve been wanting to piddle. So I grabbed the greenie, now what do I need to do to this bow? Well first off she needs to lose a little weight, I’ll leave that right there.

So away I go one evening “Trapping the limbs” which simply means to make the back or belly glass narrower than the other. On a selfbow if I remember correctly (scary thought) you narrow or trap on the belly. On a glass backed I believe you narrow or trap the back. At least that’s what I did, so don’t correct me now! :o :(
Anyway it worked, it’s probably 45 or less now, I’m not real high tech so I didn’t check it, just going by feel, but it sure “feels” better on my shoulder!

When getting a lift you might want to address other issues, so that I did, I will explain if I can. For some strange reason I made the cut down for the hand placement nearly straight down, leaving a lot against the top of my hand when shooting. I feel the need to give it a tuck...

So I did a little tuck or reshaping and of course had to refinish the entire riser!

So now she is back in action rather than hanging on my wall.

Awsome!!! I suspect that is a smooth shooting bow. If it was a couple inches shorter id be trying to buy it. Very nice
