Birth of a bow - Elysian

This longbow build is for Dave (Stumper).

Dave ordered this bow soon as he found out about the short form that I was working on and completed here recently.

Both he and Dale have been very patient with the testing process and many other personal issues that have plagued my household, family and one of my longtime friends in the last 2 to 3 months.

So on with my next build.

A longbow that Dave has named Elysian.

This will be a 52" 52# @ 26" longbow.
The materials Dave has picked out for his short ElkSeeker longbow are Green glass, Osage riser and actionboo core. I will be using the same method, as test bow #2, used on Dale's longbow.

The block was a bit thick so I used my bandsaw and cut it down to 1 1/2" in thickness. Then I traced out the shape of the riser using my new template and cut the block all to pieces.

I then shaped it to match the form.

I took some of the actionboo that I re-sawed when I made my taper for Dales bow and made another taper along with 2 parallel laminations to the thicknesses I needed to make the weight Dave requested.

Cut the Green glass to length and now I am ready to glue up the longbow.

I got the epoxy spread and put Daves bow in the hot box. Cooked it for about 3 1/2 hrs. I let it cool and removed it from the form.

Now on to cleaning it up, getting a straight edge and finding the center.

After getting my centerline I layout and start cutting the limb profile and sand to my layout lines which are still strong of what the limbs will actually be.

Now it's on to milling out the riser overlays. I will be putting Osage and green glass in as the accents and overlays.

Once I mill the accents and overlays I can use the smaller off cut from them to make the tip overlays.
