Ensure to check it unbraced from time to time so you can monitor set. Where it is bending unbraced it is taking set. those areas are thinner. once it has taken set, you can't really remove it. Each piece of wood will react differently. Some I have done have taken .25 set, some as much as 2.0 obviously the lower the better.

Put up a new background board today.

Greg, can we get a better picture of your vise and how you have the board in it? I thought about doing as you but was afraid the top would come towards me. I clap mine to the side of my tree.

Ideally, fastened to a wall would be perfect but I don't have the open wall space I want.

Man, hate that sound. but the good news is that it wasn't an expensive piece of wood. You learned a lot from this and are more prepared for the next one. I was nearly tillered with a red oak board bow, my dad was standing about five feet from me as I pulled the string down to 24" with my pully string. it didn't make much of a sound as the lower limb snapped off. a lot better here than in a shot. I have been super slow in my build right now, got to lower the pull weight a bunch but I've learned my lesson and not getting in a hurry.
