Gettin' wet FINALLY!!!!
Wyatt and I went out to the 10 acre pond of my friends, it's been our little hot spot for 12 years now. My friend told me a month ago that when his mother in law passes, she is 92, the family will be selling the place. Ugh.... kind of hurts since he has given us full reign to do whatever outside adventure we've ever wanted to do there on the 80 acres. Things change though, nothing we can do about that!
So we've decided to try and make the best of it and fish it as much as possible while we can. Full of nice crappie and largemouth bass.... We had a pretty good 2.5 hour fishing trip and ended up rewarded with a fat basket of good eating chunky crappie. We also caught 9 decent sized bass. Here are some pics from the short adventure on a very nice evening here in Kansas...
The truck at the spot we always put in at.... Looking North to the dam.. Looking south.. A good start on a basket.... Wyatt exhibiting one of his nice chunkys... After getting home, we got them all fillet out, and my women commenced to frying us up fresh crappie. We all 3 ate until we about busted, having nothing but fish for our supper. Man those black crappie fried fresh in light cornmeal are the bomb! We have more then enough for 2 more utter gorgings...lol! Hoping to go a short while tomorrow!

Crappie are one of most under rated fish. So good to eat and on the right tackle what a fight!!
Nothing clears a troubled mind like shooting a bow.

Crappie are walleye are considered the best table fair around here. Those own fish are sure fun to catch when you get into a mess of them. What tackle and lures were you boys Using?

Lots of fun for sure! Went back this afternoon with my oldest son Russ and daughter in law Caity. Extremely windy and miserable, but we managed to fish a couple hours. We caught just short of what we did yesterday but wasnt near as enjoyable, but still enough so to tough it out. Russ pounded several in the 14 inch range but I only picked up 2 around that size. The rest were around 10 or 11 inches. More nice bass of the same broods as yesterdays.
Dave, you are right! While I listen to most say how easy crappie are, I ask how many have ever caught 15" or larger crappie. Most often they have to answer no....let alone 17 or 18 inch fish. Largemouth are easy too, if all you ever catch are 12-15 inchers..... big fish of any species are never easy. Crappie just flat taste better to boot!
Longtrad- 2" swim tail grub tri colored yellow/black body with red tail, and Johnson Crappie Buster Shad tubes in Chartreuse/white, on 1/8 oz. jig heads retrieved slow in 3-7ft of water along submerged dormant weed beds on the down wind side. Ultra light and light 7ft St Croix and G. Loomis spinning rods, (4) Penn and (1) Okuma 2000- 2500 size spinning reels running 4lb and 6lb Stren clear blue monofilament.

I usually use a tenkara rod that is the equivalent of a 3 or 4 weight fly rod and probably 13 feet long. Use a plain ole worm as bait with a small split shot or a fly (killer bugger or some other variant. On that rod, you'd think you hooked a marlin.
