In this case I would go for the sure thing and shoot the small buck.
But for me, I really like venison and I just wouldn't chance not getting a harvest waiting for the big buck.
What would you do?

Re: What would you do?
For me, it's not even a question of the right thing to do.
You said "less than an hour of shooting light"...that means waiting for the big one to (possibly!) come in at best might put you with less than half an hour...and if you get the shot, you're now tracking in the dark.
Big Boy will be likely there next time around. Drop the smaller buck, track and recover in the light, put meat in your freezer and sleep well that night.

Aim small, miss small!

Sleep well at night? Imagine at the sound of you shot, a monster buck tailing the young one bolts back into the thick stuff
Jesus replaces the old covenant and speaks to the believer the moral code of God by His Spirit directly to the heart. He is the eternal, everlasting revelation of God to mankind. In Him is both the knowledge of righteousness and the power to live right.

Meh...no worries. God made lots of deer. They will be back and so would I.
Aim small, miss small!

I’ll pass. Even if I don’t get the shot. I’ll enjoy watching him.
