Today was Honey Extraction Day!

#1 Post by dhaverstick »

After 2 years of beekeeping, I finally got to harvest some honey today. I robbed one of my hives last week and the frames have been sitting in my house just waiting for me to empty them of their prize. The honey is now settling in my honey bucket. I will bottle my bounty in a couple days or so. A fresh batch of biscuits will have to be made to celebrate the occasion!

Here is a short video of the process.

Nice. Did you place it out to let the bees clean it up?

Chris, yes I did but I didn't think about it at first. I just set all the stuff outside on the porch to get it out of the way. In about 30 minutes I had a cloud of bees right outside the door. I knew my wife would not be happy about that when she came home so I put on my bee suit and moved the super of empty frames and the extraction equipment over next to my hives. I think they are cleaned up now.

It is amazing how well they clean everything up. It helps to lay the extractor over on its side. Once they get there belly’s full it’s hard for them to fly straight up.

I will bottle my honey tonight after work. I couldn't resist testing some out after the harvest so I made a batch of buttermilk biscuits to put it on. Delicious!
