Happens to me every year...

The majority of your bowhunting year is spent practicing and/or training. This is the place to discuss it!

Happens to me every year...

#1 Post by Carpdaddy »

The bug hits and I start itching, I get all fired up about hunting, and start getting serious about shooting, stuff like that! It happened this time after reading the post with a poll on how much do you shoot. I have just been toying around so far but from now to season I am all in! Here’s what has happened so far since the poll. I have began shooting some even if short time every week day. I have put up my target range arrows. The 600 spine arrows with 175-200 grain points, faster farther flying is over, time for the big boys to come out! I am now shooting 29”, 500 spine, weighted inside, 250 grain tipped arrows. Been testing something different this time, rather than full length weight tubes or aquarium tubing, I am adding weight to the front half of my arrows only. I add just a bit of hot melt glue to keep them from sliding. I’m looking for that sweet spot, getting heavy as I can, with as high of foc as I can, without hurting flight. Here is where I was yesterday and test shot today...

Hard to tell on that scale but on a digital scale one is just over 700 grains, the other 650. The lighter one weighted in front half of shaft, the heavier through entire shaft. The lighter front half weight arrows flew best. You can’t tell a difference really at hunting ranges so I began my testing at 30 yards. First shot was with a front weighted 600 grain arrow, second shot with a 650 grain arrow. Later I tried the 700 grain one. Anyone care to venture a guess on where my first couple arrows hit?

And I also tried with two bows, one 40#, and one 45#.

Got it Grabs!
My thinking and probably most anyone would think that the heavier arrows would drop like a rock compared to the lighter ones. The picture shows results, so now I have a question.. Since I don’t knowingly gap to know for sure, does the mind make adjustments for the added weight and cause me to aim higher?? Only way I can know for sure is to try and watch and make mental notes of the gap on different weight arrows. I’ll probably lose a few arrows trying this.

Another question, why can’t I do as well at 12 yards??

Hmmm. This conversation is right down my alley since we are using roughly the same poundage....and I'm toying with weight. I like what I'm seeing.

Your mind will compensate. The human brain is amazing. Might I also add that your bows look amazing!
Nothing clears a troubled mind like shooting a bow.

I personally don't think your mind HAS to compensate with only 50gr. of difference. Unless you are a WAY better shot then the average good archer, the difference can't be seperated or rightfully detected apart from our flaws vs the extra 50gr. Does anyone really understand just how little weight 50gr really is? Many aluminum broadhead inserts are 42gr.....they feel like a feather in your hand.

Edit....50gr is 114 THOUSANDS of an ounce..or a little over 3 grams....let that sink in just a second...
The element of surprise can never be replaced by persistence.
